Addendum: While what I said above is true I'm going to hold off; AMD are due to release their new 45nm chips pretty soon, and gaming marks are heavily in favour of Intel right now. I do some video editing and number crunching, but my pc is really for games more than anything else. (At least, you don't need a fast cpu for pr0n).

Well its out - first impressions anyone? Up on Steam for US50 - my machine should run it but interested to hear first impressions from people. Lots of complaints on the forums about the multiple background programmes you need to have running to play and the heavy graphic requirements.

Hurray - finally it plays! Could have waited till now and saved myself 30% and had to spend over $400 on a new graphics card but anyway.....

Gameplay seems more of the entertaining combination of violence and humour from previous versions. What other game could you beat to death two men, chase down another and push him from a second storey, watch some TV, buy some new clothes and go on a date?

Its running at 1280 x 1024 with most of the settings on high - gets me around 25 to 30 FPS - will experiment to see if I can get it at a smoother 35 to 40.

There's a ferrari shop on the east side in the middle island about half way up. Walk in, choose your color and drive away.

I ran fraps and average between 33 and 57 fps, depending on how many objects there were and how fast I was going.

I ran the benchmark in GTAIV itself:

CPU Usage: 81%
System memory usage: 56%
Video memory usage: 89%

Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1920 x 1200 (60 Hz)
Texture Quality: High
Render Quality: High
Reflection Resolution: High
Water Quality: Very High
Shadow Quality: Very High
View Distance: 26
Detail Distance: 51
Vehicle Density: 31
Shadows: 5
Definition: On
VSync: Off

Hardware
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Service Pack 3
Video Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
Video Driver version: 6.14.10.6903
Audio Adapter: SB X-Fi Audio [EC00]

I finished GTA 4 and it was well worth it because the final couple of missions were original with excellent graphics. Overall, a good game with a decent story line. The graphics look amazing, especially the car explosions. The only downside was the some of the missions were repetitive (there are at least 5 motorbike missions where you have to chase someone on the motorbike and kill them) and lack of chainsaw . The car handling is very well designed, especially the infernus and the sultan which is a souped up subaru which has fire coming out of the sides when shifting gears..

The game is worth the money spent. The multiplayer is good aswell, especially the car races.

New patch to support Lost and the Damned, and it seems to have fixed everything we hated about GTAIV.
GTA IV Title Update 1.0.6.0 \ 1.0.5.1 \ 1.0.4.2

Rockstar Games Social Club
• Remove Rockstar Games Social Club application
• Separate RGSC application no longer required to launch game
• Social Club login now occurs during the launch process

Shadows
• A new, less memory-intensive, and better-looking scalable shadow solution has been implemented
• Enhanced Night Shadows added with user-selectable level of detail (replaces Shadow Density)

Performance
• Rendering optimizations have been made to improve performance, particularly when enabling shadows
• User-configurable graphics settings have been added for shadow control
• Improved memory management

Multiplayer
• Enhanced security to isolate users from cheaters and hackers

Episodic Content
• Provide in-game support to purchase "The Lost and Damned" and "The Ballad of Gay Tony" (Not available in Russian/Japanese Versions)

Bug Fixes
• Vehicle shadows re-enabled between 8pm and 6am
• Fix floating street textures
• Pedestrians in vehicles appear further out from the player to allow for long range sniping
• The Moon has been implemented with simulated lunar phases
• Fixed garbled text in Japanese Multiplayer menus
• "RESC 10" error fix for specific hardware configurations

The game does play much better now - to the point where I am going through the storyline missions.

Will wait a few months to pick up the expansion packs on the cheap - have too many games to play right now anyway.......

Finally finished it yesterday. I found some of the missions too repetitive and there was a lack of humour compared to others in the series.

Not a stand out, Vice City was better, but a good game nevertheless.
