Mine did not update last night or today, still no pings, gamearena severs always full. I'd like to play a local game.

Note that the updates are not through steam - BC2 has its own update manager I think.

Pings seem hit an miss for me. You only end up with pings for ~10% of servers at the best of times. Last night there were no pings for any AU servers.
You need to look for local clan servers, rather than just relying on GameArena - at least until EA lets the ISPs restart their servers.
Note that the name filter in the server browser is case sensitive! Try searching for Aus or Sydney.
If I get time, I'll try to update the favorites list for servers that actually exist. We should try to get an official BB server list.

although everyone complained about MW2's server system it seems easier than BC2- I nearly always get onto a game quickly.

Can't say I've had any problems getting into servers. I just use the option to let it find a server for me an it's been fine.

yes, played with Brad and Piers tonight. I struggled with the frame rate. I think my video card is being pushed also but I get some games where it is really playable and I go well and others where I just get nailed. I did have a 6 kill streak tonight for the first time.

Brad, do you have BC through STEAM? I can't see any sign of it updating either through STEAM or in-game...

Anyway, it turns out there is another one on the way for STEAM users v522175 which fixes some reported crash bugs introduced for certain hardware with teh last patch, but it will also remove the SecureROM protection from the STEAM version which has apparently been causing some of the slow login and server browser issues.

Yes, I have it through steam.
I haven't seen the game updating yet, but I have noticed that some things are fixed. Maybe it is all server side, but the ping was actually showing up last night consistently.

The automatic server placement tends to chuck you into just any server - there's no attempt to find low ping...

As I mentioned, filter for "AU" showed lots of Aussie servers last night, many of them empty.

Good game last night with Piers and Jeff, especially once Piers joined the squad. It makes such a difference (the way it always does in BF) when the squad works together. There was one squad on the other side working really well, plus us offsetting them. Sometimes they pwned, sometimes we did.
Rush is very interesting - it can feel like you are loosing horribly and just endlessly dying when you are attacking, but you can still win, because the defenders have endless tickets. Mind you we pulled off some flukey wins last night where we were attacking and got down to about 10 tickets left before blowing the base. I've maxed out the Medic class now - time to start working on something else.

That first server you were in last night was in Austria - pings were ~400. That might have had something to do with it?

Yeah, I need to explore the interface a bit more - took me ages to work out when I could switch squads. Those rv.Evil guys were killing me all the time, especially gingo

Okay, worth summarising some game points for new players:

- At the spawn screen, click on the top of the weapon list to let you choose which weapons for which classes. As you level up in each class, you get more weapons and other things to choose. Click again at the top to minimise the choice window. I set up all the weapons for all 4 classes at the start, so that all I have to do is choose the class and location before I spawn once the game is underway.
- similarlly, click on the side of the spawn position screen to expand the squad choice window. This lists every squad in the team and lets you choose your squad. Suggest you try to fill squads as a priority - a good squad of 4 is much more effective than a squad of 3 or two squads of 2.
- In the spawn screen, the list below is there for a reason - anything not greyed out is a possible spawn location, including any live member of your squad.
Use the q key all the time. This is the "socialise" key. In practice, this lets you:
    - spot enemies, so that everyone else on your team can see them. In non-hardcore games, this results in a red triangle over the heads of enemies so that they stand out. If someone else kills them after you've spotted, you get 20 point assist. At the very least it lets everyone else on your team see where the enemy are coming from.
    - set objectives for the team. Choose which flag / base your are attacking or defending. Every time there is a successful attack or defense of this base you get a 10 point assist.
    - call / offer ammo / health. I haven't completely worked out how this works - seems a bit hit or miss.

- Note that a revive / heal / resupply / repair of a squad mate is worth twice as much as normal. Stick together!
- You get points for each pins that you earn in a round - 7 kills, 5 revives, 5 resupply, 5 heals, 7 assists, 2 revenge kills, 2 saviour kills, attacks, defends, round win etc etc
- You also get bronze, silver and gold stars (worth 1k, 5k 10k). These are generally for 25, 50 and 100 kills (I think) with each gun. It is worth trying each gun enough to get the stars to accumulate the points. There are also stars for each class of vehicle, mounted weapon etc.

That's where I was playing well, things went pair shaped when I joined you guys :) I have been playing a lot of engineer and I'm getting nailed trying to take out tanks.

I need to experiment with the tracer dart. (You equip it in place of a pistol.)
The idea is you fire one into a tank and then missiles can home on it.
