When good servers die...

Postby Mort » Wed Mar 15, 2006 9:48 am

Well, I must remember to restart my firewall after a major ADSL outage. For some reason everything except the Web publishing rules work after the restart... and that means everything exepct the actual web sites are visible to the internet.

Piers.. What are the chances of getting a web site monitor running on your server? Something that just polls my web site every hour or so to check if it gives a 404 and send me an email or something?

At the moment, I use the validator service to check if it is up when I suspect something is going wrong. It's reactive rather than pro-active, so unless someone tells me, I can't tell if it is visible outside my firewall or not.

BTW - the main BB page has several non-compliance issues ;)

Actually, I just did a google and found a bunch of "free" monitoring sites. I might try them out and see how they go.

http://www.internetseer.com/home/index.xtp - Believed to be mass data collectors that then sell the "research" to potential spammers...
http://www.siteprobe.com/ - Can't find anything bad
http://www.siteuptime.com/ - Can't find anyhing bad, seems popular with anti-spam sites even.
http://www.killersites.com/siteMonitor/siteMonitor.jsp - looks like an "extra" service from a web design company.

Ever heard of any of these before?

(doing some more googling before I subscribe...)

If you are curious, here is the link to the BuddaBudda web site uptime monitor. I have it set to poll every 60 minutes and notify if it dissapears.
