I re ran 3d mark 06 before the installation of the new graphics card (with 7950GT) and got a score of 5000 points - looking back when I first bought this rig I got 6000 or so?

With the new card - 4870 1G got a 3d mark 06 score of 9832.

System is :
p5B Intel E6400 @ 2.13 G
Gecube 4870 1G
2G RAM

Hmmm, I'd have thought you'd get a much better score than 9832 with that card - there must be something holding it back (which might explain why you had lost 1300 points with the old card as well).

I take that back, 9800 is probably right with your CPU but you might be able to get to 10000 with a bit of tweaking. My creaky old AMD 3800+ only manages 8000 with an HD4870, I'm going to get a new mobo and cpu on the weekend.

I did a quick tweak test but it was a hot day so not ideal. I think KRaM is happy with 9880, and it could hit 10,000 I reckon, but with his crappy non-ventilated case I don't think pushing the overclocking for a slightly better number is worth it.

My new rig has:

Palit HD4870 1GB Sonic Dual Edition
Core2Duo e8500 CPU
Asus P5Q Pro @ 3.16GHz
Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Gamer EC00
Primary HDD: 500GB SATA
XP SP3
3.25GB DDR2 800 (It's 4GB but is limited by XP)

3dmark06 score, without playing with the BIOS at all: 13673 ( sub-scores are 5820 / 7065 / 2946 )

Am I the first [BB] past 15000?

I've overclocked my Palit HD4870 to 790/1050 (stock is 775MHz core, 1000MHz memory)
I've also overclocked my e8500 so it's running at 4.2GHz instead of 3.166GHz

After that, the new 3dmark06 scores are:

15517 ( sub-scores: 6288 / 7671 / 3814 )

Leaving the Palit at stock gives me:

15217 ( 6133 / 7464 / 3821 )

So the CPU OC is the real winner - as confirned by UserBench - up from 45.69 to 60.09

what are you using to oc the cpu - just the nvidia desktop app?
Once I did a boom gnarly stunt trick on it and a girl got pregnant just by watching my extremeness to the maxxxx.

No, I've changed the frequencies and voltages in the bios - I tried out the ATI EPU-6 software overclocker but it did next to nothing.

Here's what I changed:
(Asus P5Q Pro with e8500 Core2Duo)

Code: Select all

AI OC Tuner - Manual
CPU Ratio 9.5
FSB Frequency 440
PCIE Frequency 105
CPU Voltage 1.325
CPU PLL Voltage 1.50
FSB Terminal Voltage 1.30
DRAM Voltage 2.1
Load Line Calibration Enabled
* Spread Spectrum Disabled
* Clock Skew Auto

I've read that FSB Freq of 450 & CPU Volt of 1.4 would get me 4.275GHz, but not all e8500s can do it; I'm nice and stable where I am so I don't think I'll try pushing it further.

So, I finally upgraded my video card - ATI 5870.
Running on my machine Core2Duo - E8500 running @ 4.0Ghz, 4Ghz ram

The first set of very rough benchmarks (I had steam and a bunch of stuff running in the background.)
3dMark06 - 18015 (7911/9655/3572)
3dMarkVantage - P6974

None of these really convey how fast this card is. I've been playing COD4 a fair bit recently. Compared to my overclocked 880GTX, this card is running more than twice the framerates with the eyecandy maxed out, including 6xAA all at 1900x1200. And the difference between 40FPS and 90FPS is worth a lot of kills.

By the way - to get any sort of decent benchmark from 3dmark06 under Windows 7 x64, I had to run the program as administrator. It runs fine as the normal user, but I was getting benchmarks around 12000... Not sure I think the 3dmark06 numbers mean to much these days.

First pass with the 3dMark benchmarks running a quick 'n' dirty install of Win7 over the top of my old one. No tweaking, optimising, overclocking has been done as yet.

05 - 22138
06 - 16214 (6403/7464/4746)
Vantage - 9391 (11734/8805)

Next step clean Win7-64 install, then some tweaking.

3Dmark Vantage only lets you run *one* benchmark test using the free trial key?!?!? Well, stuff that.

No need to "tune" those services and programs anymore. Just ran 3DMark06 with steam, EA, Outlook, AV etc all still running and actually got a higher score than a completely clean Win7 install with nothing else in it!

So just upgraded the CPU, bit suspicious because it has all been a bit too easy.

My revised system is:
Q9400 @ 2.66GHz
2 GIG RAM
4850 1G ATI Graphics card

Change has been the CPU from the dual core E6400. Ran 3d Mark 06 this morning and got 9884 3dmarks (4350/5460/1883) - strangley higher than when I last run 3d mark.

With the revised CPU I get 13,668 3dmarks (5389/6105/4285). Now the real test - will it play GTAIV? Yes it does - my god the game is playable now with frame rates of 40 to 50 a second.

Good work. I guess I won't come round tomorrow to help you install it then.
