There's a 3dmark11 now? time to go re-run some benchmarks...

Everything stock speeds with all the other crap still running on my machine. It still exceeded the "expected scores for my hardware" so that's a good sign.

3dMark11 - 5770 - 6970
Score: 2711 - 5014
Graphics: 2662 - 5438
Physics: 4093 - 4126

G test2: 12.63 fps - 28.04
G test 3: 15.17 fps - 32.81

Just updated my previous post with the results after throwing in the 6970. Not sure when I'll get the SSD drive in (probably not till next week sometime) but it will be interesting to see how it goes on that with a fresh Windows install.

Just bought a new laptop for work, and while I wasn't really after a performance machine the number of options with screen resolutions I liked were a bit limited. In the end I got an HP model that only just came out, and it's not a big heavy desktop replacement thing either. It does have an ATi 7670M in it though which has a fairly respectable amount of kick.

Just ran 3dmark11 on a clean Windows8 install and it's reporting 5129. So that's a bit higher than my clean Win7 install did. Not bad considering the Video drivers and the OS are all still pre-beta. One really obvious difference is how much smoother it looked. Even on Win7 it still looked like it would "jump" a frame or two every now and then, but it's perfectly smooth on Win8.

3dMark06 doesn't work. It throws an error about the DX9 stuff, and I'm guessing Futuremark won't be releasing a patch for that. There is a Windows8 version of 3DMark in development at the moment I believe, so will be interesting to see what that looks like.

First benchmarking run Win 8, OCZ Vector 3 SSD, GTX680 (stock), on the i7-920@4Ghz
3d Mark 11 = P9062

GRAPHICS SCORE
9442
PHYSICS SCORE
8523
COMBINED SCORE
7509

I should have more time to play with overclocking the graphics tomorrow. Still on air so far though.

Not yet. I needed to replace the hard drive - hence the SSD, and my 5870 was starting to get a little long in the tooth - running BF3 at low settings, so I upgraded to the GTX680.

However, the 5870 was part of the watercooling loop - removing it properly (as opposed to having the old graphics card dangling from the side of my case like it is now) will require a proper rebuild.

I'm in two minds as to whether I will replace the CPU and motherboard as long as I am rebuilding the system. The CPU is an i7-920, running quite happily at 4ghz on water. Replacing it is an extravagence - I'll probably only get a 25-30% pickup in CPU power, assuming I get a Sandy Bridge - E to around 5ghz which is not guaranteed. I'm not sure I'd notice the difference going to SATA3 instead of the current SATA2 that I'd get with a new motherboard.

I've already decided to move to a Cosmos II case - with the current CM Stacker II I ran out of space for hard drives thanks to the water cooling gear.

So I'll probably just content myself with putting the new graphics card into the water cooling loop.

1. The money I save on the rack I spend on a graphics card. Where was I inconsistent?
2. I used screws.
