SSD upgrade

Postby KRaM » Tue Jun 19, 2012 1:10 pm

With my recent windfall of birthday cash thought I would put it towards upgrading the hard drive on the PC. My current HDD is at least 5 years old, if not older, and I have started to notice that boot up times etc are starting to lag. My plan is to have the SSD for the OS and some games with a great big HDD for everything else. Doing some research thought the following buys from
Mwave would make sense.

http://www.mwave.com.au/sku-22040469-Seagate_Barracuda_2TB_HDD

http://www.mwave.com.au/sku-22140647-Samsung_830_Series_128GB_2_5%22_Solid_State_Drive_SATA_III_520MB_s_Read_& - pricey Vs OCZ and not at Mwave anymore

Make sense or has my dodgy half assed understanding of PC technology let me miss something?

Nope, that's pretty much it. I probably wouldn't pick the Samsung SSD myself, but essentially that's the way I've got it running.

128GB min for SSD is the go though.

Hmm any reason why not to get the Samsung - seem to get ok reviews on toms hardware etc.

TechReport do regular SSD reviews. Whilst their conclusions don't necessarily apply in Australia just due to the price differentials, it serves to eliminate the dogs. The one message I got from the reviews is that size matters - the slowest 256gb drive is faster than the fastest 128gb SSD. Buy the biggest SSD you can afford.

I bought a 240GB OCZ Vortex 3.

yours is bigger than mine :( I got the 128GB OCZ Vertex3...

I'm running it on a SATA3 port, and it does make a difference over running it on SATA2, particularly for "big file" stuff. If you are just doing things that just involve lots of little files then it probably wouldn't make much difference.

Ordered the OCZ Vertex 3 from IT Arc last night - the Samsung SSD disappeared from Mwave and I figured I might as well save myself a few bucks.
