I've just upgraded the Server disks. Running with an Adaptec 6405 RAID controller and 4 x 2TB SAS drives. Will post benchmarks later.
Damn it's fast. The key thing for the server is not just the raw throughput, but also the random access times. Pretty much the whole time Windows reports these disks with a 0 to 1 ms response time. Running as RAID10 again, but even when I start every single virtual machine at the same time they still cruise. Starting more than 2 or 3 on the SATA disks (even under RAID10) would start to backlog.
It probably also helps a lot that the controller has a 512MB cache on it I got a flash module backup for it so I don't have to worry about unexpected power failures. I did some testing before going live with randomly disconnecting drives and doing dirty shutdowns to see how it handled it all. Apart from an annoyingly long beep when restarting (to let you know about dirty shutdown), it handles everything perfectly. So here's hoping no more serious disk crashes!
