New Graphics Card

Postby KRaM » Tue Nov 11, 2014 8:05 pm

So am starting to look around for a new graphics card and selected the Nvidia GeForce GTX 970. Will use this post to keep track of my costing/notes:

ARC http://arc.com.au/pub.php?p=search&a=in ... 99674.6832 - Gigabtyte/Asus $500
MWave http://computers.mwave.com.au/search#w= ... 0GTX%20970 Gigabyte/EVGA/Windforce/MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G - $500

It's pretty close between the GTX 970 & the AMD R9 290X - 290X is usually cheaper so might still be a good buy.
Oddly, Tom's hardware recommends both.

After some umming and ahhing have decided to go with the MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming 4GB Video Card ( http://www.msi.com/product/vga/GTX-970-GAMING-4G.html#hero-overview ). Seems to edge out the Gigabyte version in most of the reviews.

Have one question though given my general lack of any technical PC knowledge. It needs a 1x 8-pin and 1x 6-pin power connectors. My PSU is 900w (went a bit overboard after the last one died) Antec HCG-900 http://www.antec.com/product.php?id=705185&fid=5022035&lan=nz .

Am I correct in assuming that since I have 4 x 6+2 PCI-E connectors I am sorted here? http://www.antec.com/connectors.php?ProdID=23890

I think so, or from memory if this was one I helped setup then we used an adapter to convert to an 8-pin connector (or something like that)

Have a look at your current card, it probably uses the same connections.

Had a bit of a Google and think it should all be fine - have it on order now. Will update my PC benchmark when I get it all sorted.

Need to do a benchmark now before the swap for a good comparison.
