Win07 - region free?

Postby Piers » Wed Jul 28, 2010 1:58 pm

It's only just occurred to me that no matter what DVD I put into my Win7 laptop, it never bugs me about the region code and happily plays it.
Have M$ dumped DVD region checking? Do they still check Bluray?

Windows has never been region locked, it is the DVD hardware itself that has the region locking on it.

Haven't looked recently, but new DVD players will typically allow you to change regions 7 times or something and will then lock on the last region you used. There were some DVD players you could get that had "unlocked" firmware that stopped them locking. This was never anything to do with Windows, but Windows was able to read the value from the DVD firmware and report it.

Go into your device manager and have a look at the propertied of your DVD hardware, there is a "Region" tab that give you the current state.
